About us
Established in London in 1824, the RSPCA was recognised as the first organisation in the world to concentrate solely on animal welfare issues. The South Australian body of the RSPCA was formed in 1875 to protect innocent animals against cruelty and provide treatment and care for thousands of sick, injured and abandoned animals.
The RSPCA is responsible for preventing animal cruelty by actively promoting the five freedoms for animals:
- Freedom from Hunger and Thirst
- Freedom from Discomfort
- Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease
- Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour
- Freedom from Fear and Distress
Other objectives of the RSPCA are to:
- enforce the prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act investigate all reports of alleged animal cruelty throughout the State
- lobby Government for improvements to legislation
- conduct routine inspections of piggeries, battery farms, saleyards, abattoirs, markets, pet shops and circuses
- rescue trapped animals
- educate the public about the humane treatment of animals
- provide a 24 hour rescue service for sick and injured stray animals
