Man found guilty of neglect and mistreatment

Mr. Robert Neville Braithwaite was found guilty of two counts of animal neglect and mistreatment in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on April 10. Penalties will be handed down on April 24.
Mr.Braithwaite was found guilty on one count of ‘neglect so as to cause an animal pain’ and one count of ‘general mistreatment’ after his miniature poodle was found horrifically matted, flea ridden and with extremely long nails. The sheer weight of the matted fur was causing it to pull away the skin at several points on the dog, ‘Spud’ which lead to open sores. The total weight of fur taken off of the poodle called ‘Spud’ was .7 of a kilogram, Spud’s total body weight was just 2.8 kg. It’s thought Spud may have been in this condition for up to six months.
‘The excess weight of the matted fur, and the way in which it was ripping the skin off would have caused Spud extreme pain and severe discomfort. It’s a horrific case of neglect, obviously, the guilty verdict is pleasing.’ Aimee McKay, RSPCA.
Spud is doing extremely well now, and has been permanently adopted by the family who were his foster carers. (pictures above)
The Higham case, Joseph and Margarite, who had more than 170 dogs in their possession, also went before court yesterday. Of all the evidence heard yesterday, veterinarian, Dr. Jillian Hall-Smith’s account of the case was most poignant. She said one of the terrier cross dogs would have suffered his whole life, and that the abuse was ’spectacular.’ He was severely malnourished, had a severe case of worms, and never developed properly. As all the animals involved in this case, the RSPCA and the many vets involved gave the dog as much care as possible, however he was beyond recovery, and was put down.
